Veterinary Endoscopy & Rhinoscopy

At Wayside Animal Hospital in Ellijay, we’re continually expanding our ability to provide comprehensive veterinary care for the pets in our community. We’re pleased to offer endoscopy and rhinoscopy, advanced diagnostic procedures that allow our veterinary team to examine areas inside your pet’s body using specialized camera equipment.

What Is Veterinary Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a small, flexible or specialized scope equipped with a camera and light to examine internal structures. Depending on the type of scope and the area being evaluated, endoscopy may allow veterinarians to examine portions of the digestive tract and investigate symptoms that may not be fully explained by a physical examination alone.

What Is Veterinary Rhinoscopy?

Rhinoscopy is a specialized procedure that allows veterinarians to examine the inside of your pet’s nasal passages using a small camera-equipped scope. It can be particularly helpful when a pet experiences ongoing nasal or respiratory symptoms that need further investigation.

Your veterinarian may recommend rhinoscopy to help evaluate:

  • Persistent sneezing

  • Chronic nasal discharge

  • Nasal bleeding

  • Suspected foreign material in the nasal passages

  • Unexplained nasal inflammation or other abnormalities

Rhinoscopy can help the veterinary team identify changes inside the nasal passages and, when appropriate, collect samples for additional diagnostic testing. The findings can help guide decisions about further testing and treatment.

    Benefits of Endoscopy and Rhinoscopy

These advanced diagnostic tools offer several potential benefits for pets, depending on their condition and individual needs.

Detailed internal visualization: Specialized camera equipment allows veterinarians to examine areas that cannot be fully evaluated from the outside.

Support for accurate diagnosis: Direct visualization and the ability to collect certain samples may help determine the cause of persistent or unexplained symptoms.

Minimally invasive evaluation: These procedures can sometimes provide valuable diagnostic information without the need for more invasive exploratory surgery.

More informed treatment planning: Findings from an endoscopic or rhinoscopic examination can help your veterinarian recommend the next steps in your pet’s care.

Not every condition can be diagnosed or treated with a scope. Your veterinarian will determine whether one of these procedures is appropriate for your pet.
